Faculty Member, Religious Studies
Perlow Lecturer in Classical Judaism
About
My research focuses primarily on Jewish history during the early Roman period (ca. 1st century BCE - 3rd century CE, though with spillage on either end of the chronological spectrum). I'm particularly enticed by Jewish interactions with the wider Greco-Roman context - especially social contexts and material culture. My first book focuses precisely on the latter, using primarily (though not exclusively) the writings of Flavius Josephus to explore Jewish discourses on statues/images. My next book, provisionally titled Discourses on Decadence, will explore the politics of immorality in Jewish and Christian literature (pre-Christian Roman period).
Although research and writing are loads of fun, my work in the classroom is the most thrilling aspect of my job. My courses focus primarily on Jewish antiquity, from ancient Israel through Rabbinic Judaism, with a sprinkling of early Christianity thrown into the mix.
